Weekly Activity
"Operation: Advocacy for a Better Digital Future"
**Final Project Component #2"
Project Teams should work on this project in Weeks 8, 9, & 10.
Project Submission Deadline: April 17, 2026
(late submissions will not be judged)
Welcome to Tech-Forward Future. You and your project team will step into the Future as Community Advocates to identify and address a pressing technology-related issue to make your community—and the world—a better, safer, and more sustainable place.
Advocacy Project Instructions: Each project team will complete Operation “Advocacy for a Better Digital World.”
-
Clearly identify a technology-related issue:
A. That addresses a community or global problem or need.
B. From one of the following three pillars:
(1) Sustainability & Environmental Impact
(2) Ethics, Safety, & Accountability
(3) Health & Wellness
2. Give your advocacy project a name or title.
3. Research the technology issue and include at least one fact (statistics or data) to support the issue.
4. Issue a community Call to Action message for others to support your
project solution. Create a slogan or a one-sentence catchy phrase that
others would easily remember.
5. Develop a project solution and actions your project team can take to
address the issue.
-
A. Develop an advocacy product that addresses the issue.
-
B. Use at least one (or more) AI-generated image.
-
Choose ONE Issue From One of the Pillars
-
Pillar 1: Sustainability & Environmental Impact:
-
Context: The "cloud" is a physical drain on the planet, with AI models requiring massive amounts of electricity and millions of gallons of water for server cooling. As we upgrade to faster AI-integrated hardware, the resulting surge in e-waste releases toxins into the ground, making our digital habits a direct threat to a livable climate. Focus on the "hidden" footprint of our digital lives.
-
-
Reducing electronic waste (e-waste) from old technology devices
-
Promoting energy-efficient technology (AI increases energy consumption)
-
Reducing water scarcity caused by water used to cool AI systems
-
Eliminating chemical pollution & toxins from electronic waste that can leak into soil and water
-
Reducing habitat destruction caused by mineral mining for tech materials like lithium, cobalt, and gold
-
Pillar 2: Ethics, Safety, & Accountability:
-
Context: AI systems are increasingly making high-stakes decisions—from surveillance to warfare—without a standardized code of ethics to ensure they remain under human control and free from bias. Without strict accountability laws and "explainable AI," we risk a future where autonomous (or unmanned) systems replicate systemic inequality and operate without human oversight or a "kill switch." Address the rules of the road.
-
-
Tackling cyberbullying on social media
-
Combatting AI system bias
-
Advocating for human control over artificial intelligence systems
-
Ensuring AI can not replicate itself without human permission
-
Respecting human privacy (data collection, surveillance, unauthorized listening)
-
Promoting humans remaining responsible and accountable for AI decision-making and actions.
Pillar 3: Health & Wellness:
Context: Technology system designs may prioritize "engagement" over human health, and wellness. This may lead to a rise in teen depression, isolation, addiction, and harmful AI suggestions. These challenges may create a digital divide in communities where those with limited tech literacy or access are the most vulnerable to the mental health and safety risks in progressive digital world. Examine how technology affects our minds and bodies.
-
Promoting responsible screen time habits
-
Reducing the social media and technology addiction
-
Increasing technology education or literacy
-
Prohibiting AI systems that encourage human self-harm
-
Strengthening access to technology in underserved communities to reduce economic and wealth gaps
Examples of Advocacy Project Solutions & Actions
-
Educational eBook: (at least 3 pages & visuals): To educate community members to share knowledge or insights on the issue.
(Submit the final product in a pdf. Providing a shareable link. Be sure to set the permissions so the file is sharable or no credit will be given.)
-
Letter Writing Party & Campaign: Gather a group and host a letter writing party. Send the letter(s) to a local community member, school official or policy maker to propose a change, new policy, bill or new law to advocate for change on the issue.. Report out on who the bill was sent to and share the letter.
(Submit the final letter(s) in a pdf. Providing a shareable link. Be sure to set the permissions so the file is sharable or no credit will be given.)
-
Social Media Awareness Campaign: Use social and graphics and compelling messaging to raise public awareness and inspire change on the issue. Use all the same hashtags on all channels. Consider a hashtag challenge or viral trend – Encouraging young people and community members to participate in an engaging online challenge to spread awareness. Include screenshots to the actual social media campaign post. Report out on likes, comments, views, and other metrics.
(Submit the final product in a pdf. Providing a shareable link. Be sure to set the permissions so the file is sharable or no credit will be given.)
-
E-Petition: Create a petition (with a visual) and get signatures to show that your campaign has lots of support. Set a signature goal and report out on how successful the campaign was.
(Submit the final product in a pdf. Providing a shareable link. Be sure to set the permissions so the file is sharable or no credit will be given.)
-
Artivism (Art + Activism): Create a mural, street art, poetry, or music to creatively express an advocacy message on the issue. If poetry or music is chosen, the project team must also include a visual graphic or cover. (Submit the final art project by uploading it or providing a shareable link. Be sure to set the permissions so the file is sharable or no credit will be given.)
-
Short-film or PSA video: Create and record a compelling 2-3 minute documentary or public service announcement (PSA) that sheds light on your issue by interviewing others in the community and documenting your project solution. Share the video and post it on social media for others to view.
(Submit the final video by uploading it or providing a shareable link. Be sure to set the permissions so the file is sharable or no credit will be given.)
-
Digital Survival Kit: Create an electronic teen survival kit with a guide to protecting personal data, social media privacy checklists, short tutorials on changing privacy settings.
(Submit the final product in a pdf. Providing a shareable link. Be sure to set the permissions so the file is sharable or no credit will be given.)
-
Create a Web App: Create and publish a simple web app (using Base44.com) to solve or address your advocacy issue. Use prompting to describe your app’s features and functions to create the app. When publishing the app, ensure the App Visibility is set to “Public (no login required).
(Provide a shareable app link to the published web app. Be sure to test your app to make sure it works.)
